MIDDLESBROUGH ended a 27-year wait for a win on Wanderers soil last night thanks to a late strike from Spanish star Kike.

The £2.7million summer signing scored the winner 12 minutes from time to leave the Whites with just one point to show from their opening three games.

A night of ultimate disappointment left Wanderers in the bottom three in the Championship with the patience of many fans wearing increasingly thin.

It is 27 years since Boro last won a league game at Bolton – their last triumph coming under the stewardship of a certain Bruce Rioch en route to promotion from the old Third Division in 1987.

That was the year that Wanderers were relegated to the bottom tier for the one and only time in their history.

Craig Davies and Grant Leadbitter exchanged first-half spot kicks in what proved an absorbing encounter under the lights at the Macron Stadium.

The Whites will definitely feel that Boro should have been reduced to 10 men when defender Seb Hines tripped Davies en route to goal for the first penalty but was only punished by a yellow card by referee Stephen Martin.

Dougie Freedman’s side had the better of the second half but emerged with nothing to show for their efforts when Kike ran through on a pass from Lee Tomlin to score the winner.
