WANDERERS have completed the signing of England youth international striker Max Clayton on a three-year deal.

The former Crewe Alexandra trainee arrives at the Macron Stadium for a nominal fee, although his contract also includes a sell-on clause that would grant the League One side an added bonus if he left Bolton.

Clayton has scored 16 goals in 92 appearances for the Railwaymen, more than half of which were made as a substitute.

He had been monitored by the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool before sustaining a serious ankle injury midway through last season.

Clayton decided to leave Gresty Road in the summer and trained with Everton, Wolves and Sunderland before spending a week with Wanderers but struggled to land a deal because of potential compensation issues.

Crewe were demanding a settlement payment of around £1million, or a tribunal, which at one point looked to have forced the youngster to move abroad.

He had discussed a deal with Danish club FC Midtjylland, which would have meant a seriously diminished compensation payment to Crewe, who then reduced their terms, allowing Wanderers to step in.
