JOSH Vela could be loaned out next month as Dougie Freedman looks to prevent some of the club’s young players from going stale.

The home-grown midfielder has now recovered from a knee problem and is under consideration for a place in the squad to face Wolves at Molineux today.

But Freedman desperately wants to push Vela further and following the success of his spell at Notts County next season, could look to loan him to a Championship or higher League One club if he does not make the breakthrough soon.

“Josh has played two 90-minute games and I spoke to him yesterday (Thursday) and said if he hadn’t broken into the team before this next international break, he’s got to try and go out on loan.

“I need my younger players playing football. You can only go so far at Under-21 level, I’m not really a big fan and would rather see the younger lads playing against men.

“Too many young players walk into the training ground earning decent money and just sit tight.

“I have hammered that message home in the development squad and I hope it’s getting through.”

Freedman has been criticised by fans for not playing enough of his young players at the expense of senior pros.

But the manager remains insistent that he will only introduce players when he feels they are ready – and is quite prepared to allow them to get experience elsewhere as they continue their development.

“When they go out, people might not keep an eye on them and think we’re letting them drift away, but believe me, I keep an eye,” he said.

“I know how they are doing. And I know when they get back they’ll be better for the experience.

“We’ve got Hayden White out at Carlisle now, Conor Wilkinson at Oldham, and I want two or three more if I’m honest.

“It isn’t just a case of sending them anywhere. They need to be somewhere where they will get a game.

“And on the other side of the coin they need to be good enough. If decent clubs out there don’t think they are ready then we need to keep on working at that.

“You have to be playing football or unfortunately your career won’t take off.”
