YOU might think Wanderers’ away form has been dodgy this season – but spare a thought for the class of 1980, who went 28 games without a win.

The terrible run on the road stretched from the memorable Frank Worthington-inspired victory over Manchester United in April 1979 right up to October 1980, by which time Stan Anderson’s team were languishing at the wrong end of Division Two.

It would end at the old Gay Meadow – where Mick Carter and Brian Kidd were on target in a 2-1 win against the Shrews.

But it was not a club record. That dubious honour was registered just after the war when Wanderers went 36 games from 1948/49 to 1950/51 without a victory away from home.

A year after Anderson’s side had beaten their jinx, John Thomas netted Wanderers’ 5,000th goal in League Football but is wasn’t enough to prevent Grimsby Town leaving Burnden Park with a 2-1 win.

In 2008 two errors from Rob Green helped Gary Megson’s Wanderers leave Upton Park with a 3-1 win.

The England international presented gifts to Kevin Davies and Gary Cahill before Carlton Cole gave the home fans some hope.

That was extinguished with a brilliant free-kick from Matty Taylor four minutes from time to burst the bubble for Gianfranco Zola’s Hammers.

In 2013, Wanderers finally got up and running with their first win of the season against Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.

New signings Jermaine Beckford and Neil Danns did the damage as Dougie Freedman’s men finally got off the mark at the 11th time of asking – their worst start for more than a century.
