PHIL Parkinson has issued a derby day challenge to his Wanderers: “Make history and learn from past mistakes.”

Without a league win at Bury in 87 years, the Whites go to Gigg Lane this evening looking to extend a dominant four-game winning streak which has put them right back into promotion contention in League One.

Wanderers will have to make one change, with Derik Osede likely to come in for the injured Tom Thorpe - but with a sold out contingent of 3,200 travelling fans packed into the away end, Parkinson is demanding no let up in the effort stakes.

“If you look back to that Rochdale game, I think there was an element of us taking them lightly,” he told The Bolton News. “The players did it, I accept my portion of the blame and I think the reaction to the result from the fans told you quite a lot too. We cannot afford to go into this game like that.

“A few weeks after that game our application was better against Oldham in another local derby. That is what I am after.

“Throughout this season we have got to be willing to learn lessons from mistakes we make. League One has a way of finding you out if your attitude is not right.

“It was not that long ago that Bury were second in the league. In my own experience this is the game that their fans want to win.

“Is the reason we have waited so long to beat Bury on their own ground the fact we view them as the smaller club? Maybe. If so, it’s not a mistake I want my team to make.”

It has been exactly 11 years since Wanderers strung five consecutive clean sheets together, giving Parkinson’s side another benchmark to aim at.

Sam Allardyce’s class of 2005 shut out West Brom, Charlton and Tottenham in the Premier League, West Ham in the Carling Cup and Zenit St Petersburg in a rain-sodden UEFA Cup game during the month of October. And Parkinson would dearly love his side to emulate them as he heads towards the televised game at Gigg Lane.

“I want us to go to Bury with an air of confidence,” he said. “But the mentality has to be right. We have defended very well, scrapped tooth and nail. If we are not willing to do that, we will encounter problems.”
