WANDERERS missed out on dumping Premier League Crystal Palace out of the FA Cup by the width of a post.

Josh Vela’s second-half header bounced off the woodwork as the Whites threatened a major upset, leaving former boss Sam Allardyce still looking for his first win in charge of the Eagles.

Loic Remy also hit the woodwork for Palace and Matthieu Flamini wasted a golden chance for the South Londonders in the first half but Wanderers were much the better side after the break and James Henry was twice denied by veteran keeper Julian Speroni.

Phil Parkinson was pleased his side will be in the hat for the fourth round draw on Monday evening but a little disappointed a replay will be needed at Selhurst Park.

“We had the better chances, certainly second half, hit the post and got into some good positions,” he said.

“We said we wanted to test ourselves to see where we were and how the squad is progressing and this was a good benchmark.

“The lads played really well. There was a lot of talent on their side and coming off the bench too but we coped really well with it and looked dangerous too.

“Chances are always going to be few and far between against a team of that quality but I’m generally pleased.

“We didn’t want a draw, we wanted to win it, but we’ll go up and give a good account of ourselves again.

“They surprised us playing the diamond in the first half so we got a little bit out-numbered but once we got to grips with it we were fine.”
