WANDERERS hope Jay Spearing’s “moment of madness” will not prove too costly in a pivotal promotion fortnight.

The midfielder will be suspended for today’s clash with Bradford City and next weekend’s trip to Sheffield United after picking up a 10th booking of the campaign against Rochdale.

Referee Chris Kavanagh took the captain’s name after he kicked the ball high into the North Stand in celebration after Mark Beevers’ winning goal.

Phil Parkinson was disappointed with his captain but feels there should have been scope to appeal some of his earlier yellow cards.

“It was a moment of madness,” said the manager, who also has Beevers on nine yellow cards. “He knows it was a mistake and he’s paid the price for it. I’ll sit down and have a chat with him early next week.

“You don’t need players to pick up silly bookings.

“But on the other hand, I remember the tackle he got booked for against Walsall, which was ridiculous. It should never have been a yellow card.

“You can’t appeal yellow cards and they always say it’s because the volume of administrative problems it would cause. But the money in football at the moment – you can’t tell me they couldn’t get a whole new department for yellow card appeals.

“But Jay knows it was a stupid thing to do and it’s a big punishment.”
