DEAN Holdsworth has urged Wanderers to finish the job they started, and make themselves heroes for years to come.

Two games remain for Phil Parkinson’s side to seal promotion, starting with tomorrow’s trip to Port Vale – a ground at which they have lost just once in 117 years.

Anxiety has risen among supporters as a run of three winless games allowed Fleetwood to drag themselves within two points. But Holdsworth, who helped Sam Allardyce’s Whites into the Premier League in 2001, reckons the players should enjoy the challenge.

“It’s a two-game season,” he told The Bolton News. “This club has been through a terrible time but this season we’ve seen smiles back on people’s faces, laughter around the place again, we’ve been winning football matches.

“They are in pole position. Forget what happened last week because the only thing which matters now is what the players do on Saturday at Port Vale and then against Peterborough.

“This is what we’re in the game for. Twenty years from now you want to be able to look back and say ‘I achieved something there’ because no-one can take promotions from you.”

Victory at Vale Park could be enough to seal a return to the Championship depending on Fleetwood’s result at Gillingham. Scunthorpe and Bradford could only come into contention for an automatic promotion spot if Wanderers fail to win this weekend and they beat Swindon and AFC Wimbledon respectively.

Nerves are jangling but Holdsworth believes the players simply need to believe in the job they have done over the course of the last 44 games.

“You’ve got to trust the people you’re playing with – they’ll put their body on the line for you, and you’ll do it for them,” he said. “Trust the manager’s instructions, trust the quality of each pass and tackle you make.

“You want to look at your team-mates at the end of the season and let them know you’ve given everything you can to earn them a medal.

“When it’s done you want to shake hands and embrace the fact you’ve made history.”
