WANDERERS were handed a tricky away tie at Crewe in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Phil Parkinson’s side will go to Gresty Road on  the week commencing August 7 hoping to avoid an early exit.

The last time they made the trip, Jermaine Beckford scored in injury time to earn a 3-2 victory.

The Whites have had plenty of ups and downs in the various incarnations of the League Cup, going all the way to the final in 1995 and 2004.

But the first hurdle hasn’t always been easy to clear, so just for fun, we picked out some of Wanderers’ memorable first-round matches from the last 57 years.

August 24, 1999: Wanderers 5 Darlington 3 (6-4 on agg)

The striker did re-appear and got himself on the scoresheet as Wanderers struggled to see off the plucky Quakers.

August 27, 1991: York City 1 Wanderers 2 (3-4 on agg)

JULIAN Darby had spared Wanderers’ blushes at Burnden Park with a late equaliser in the first leg – and he scored again at Bootham Crescent to book a second-round clash with Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest.
