DOUGIE Freedman believes a good return of points over the Christmas period can propel Wanderers up the Championship table and towards the final play-off spot that he believes is still in their sights.

The Whites go into tomorrow’s home clash with Charlton Athletic seven points adrift of Watford who currently occupy that final play-off position.

But Freedman knows only too well from his time with Crystal Palace how a run of results and momentum can change things quickly.

That is what he is hoping for with Wanderers after being happy with recent performances over the last seven outings that have produced just one win and five draws.

Freedman said: “I am looking at the sixth spot and we are seven points away from that. That is just two or three wins and you are right in there.

“I am very positive from what I have seen from this team, especially in the last three or four games. We have been very unfortunate. One or two results go our way and before you know it we are in the top 10.

“We have to believe that can happen.

“The performances in the last few weeks are at a level I feel they should be. But the results have not matched the performances.

“I feel when one or two results go our way and we don’t get an injury or miss a penalty or something like that, the momentum will come. That is what happened at my last club who are nowhere near as good as these guys in terms of overall ability.”

Freedman hopes to kick start that momentum tomorrow and, like midfielder Jay Spearing, knows it is important to take advantage of three games out of the next four at the Reebok Stadium.

He is again calling on fans to crank up the volume.

He added: “The home form is obviously crucial to us.

“Away at Blackpool, Blackburn and Huddersfield recently we have played very well and not got the points we deserved. It’s home form we need to look at in terms of killing games off.

“The lads have enough quality and belief about them, they just need to see games through.

“The crowd have been fantastic in away matches and if we can carry that on at home and everyone pulls together, we can get a couple of home wins and that will be key in propelling us up the league.

“We are trying to go on a journey here; I don’t want one or two good performances and then let things slip. I feel the home performances have been good but the results haven’t been matching them.

“If we keep that level of performance up, the results will come because there is no way you will go through a whole season conceding last-minute goals.

“The message is to continue how we are playing. I hope the fans can see the direction we are going and what we are trying to do.

“We just need to turn those draws into wins.”
