WANDERERS manager Dougie Freedman is happy to have extended the loan of Norwich midfielder Jacob Butterfield until January, particularly in light of the injury to Mark Davies.

But he doesn’t necessarily feel the England Under-21 man should be pressurised into stepping into Davies’ role.

Freedman thinks Butterfield has similar but also other attributes that can aid the team.

Nevertheless, he is the obvious choice to step into the midfield three against Charlton at the Reebok Stadium tomorrow and add to his four Whites appearances to date.

The boss said: “I think Jacob is a bit of a different player who can play in a few more different positions.

“That deal was always going to be done before what happened to Mark, we sorted that on Saturday night and we are happy to have done that.

“But Mark’s injury also gives other people chances to step up in that position.”

Another midfield loanee, Jay Spearing, is confident the Whites will cope without Davies and thinks Butterfield staying is a boost in that sense as well.

Spearing added: “With Jacob coming in we have someone who can cause problems as well like Sparky (Davies).

“Jacob also loves to get on the ball and bring people into the game.

“It is entirely up to the manager who he wants to play.

“It could be on form or the team we face play in a different type of way.

“We have four games in the space of 10 days and every player needs to be ready to be called upon.”
