Targets must have Championship knowhow

CHAMPIONSHIP experience will be one of the key ingredients in any potential signings Dougie Freedman targets next month.

The Wanderers boss admits his squad are in need of experience and knowhow on the pitch at this level and aims to rectify the problem as quickly as possible when the transfer window reopens on January 1.

Stephen Warnock is expected to sign a second loan deal from Aston Villa within the next few days but Freedman is otherwise looking to land some players who can help ignite a campaign that has yet to get off the ground at all.

“To be realistic and honest, these players need some help,” he said after yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday. They are finding it very hard to adjust their game to the Championship.

“I think we need to recruit a certain type of player that understands this division, has some hunger to get back to the Premiership and sees this as a club who can do that.”

Wanderers have been linked with a couple of names over the last few days but neither Leeds United striker Luciano Becchio nor Nottingham Forest’s David McGoldrick are thought to be on Freedman’s immediate shopping list.

The recruitment drive is expected to start from the back, and the Whites boss expects to discuss a potential transfer budget with owner Eddie Davies – who was at the Reebok yesterday - and chairman Phil Gartside in the near future.

“Money can’t just buy anything you want,” he said. “You must understand what you are recruiting on and off the field and though I haven’t had that conversations with the owners yet, I’m sure I will soon,” he said.
