WORK experience goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland celebrated his Wanderers Under-21s debut on Tuesday by helping Jamie Fullarton’s side progress to the last 16 of the inaugural U21 Premier League Cup.

The 19-year-old stopper has joined the Whites from Manchester United on what is an open-ended basis similar to the agreement that sees young Whites players Conor Wilkinson and Chris Lester play for Chester.

The teenage keeper is training with Wanderers and is at the club to gain experience while providing back-up for Andy Lonergan and Arran Lee-Barrett during Adam Bogdan’s absence through injury.

The former Crewe youngster was involved with England’s Under-19s last season and signed on as a third-year scholar at Old Trafford in the summer after progressing to the Red Devils’ reserve side managed by former Wanderer Warren Joyce.

Tuesday night’s cup clash with Barnsley at the County ground in Leyland was his first in a Wanderers shirt and, despite conceding two goals, he ended up on the winning side.

The Whites’ second string started brightly in their first tie in the new competition and were in front after just a minute when Sanmi Odelusi tapped home after Zach Clough’s effort was only parried by ex-Bury stopper Christian Dibble.

Sutherland’s first action saw him palm away a Jordan Clarke effort and Wanderers doubled their lead on 19 minutes, Clough again the provider for Odelusi to dink home.

The deficit was halved on 18 minutes when Tykes forward John Cofie headed past his ex-United Youth colleague.

The visitors were on level terms just before the hour mark when Thomas Cwyka hit a piledriver into the top corner.

Barnsley then hit the crossbar but Clough secured Wanderers’ passage with two quickfire goals.

His first, on 77 minutes, after a weaving run, and three minutes later he made the final score 4-2.

The Whites U21s are now into the last 16 along with Everton, West Brom, Blackburn, Leicester and Arsenal.
