WANDERERS have confirmed that Jay Spearing will be club captain this season, and that Matt Mills will be appointed as vice captain.

Spearing wore the armband for most of last season, taking on the role from Zat Knight.

He has made a total of 85 appearances for the club over two seasons, making a loan move from Liverpool permanent last summer in a £1.5million deal.

Mills forced his way into Freedman’s side last season after a disappointing first 12 months at Bolton, becoming a first-choice centre-half.

“We’ve built up many leaders in our current group, and Jay and Matt are two of the players who are at the forefront of what we’re trying to do here,” Dougie Freedman told bwfc.co.uk.

“They both have a very good feeling for this club and know what is required to step up and lead from the front.”

“It’s a massive honour to have been named as club captain,” Spearing explained. “Having seen the great players who have previously had this honour, it is a very proud moment in my career.

“We’ve got a great group of players and staff here, and we’re now all looking forward to the new season.”
