FABRICE Muamba reckons Wanderers exposed West Ham’s weaknesses to gain a much-deserved victory at Upton Park.
The no-nonsense midfielder spearheaded the Whites’ first victory away from the Reebok since September, which lifts the club above the Hammers into 13th place in the Premier League. And he revealed that Owen Coyle’s plan going into the game had been to focus on defensive weaknesses in Gianfranco Zola’s side. “It was a great victory and you could see that by the way the boys celebrated at the end,” he said. “We’d put a great shift in. We defended extremely well, we knew their weaknesses and we exploited them. “We set ourselves up and the two early goals kind of killed the game. Credit to the boys that we deserved to win again.”
Muamba was especially pleased to have held out for the final 20 minutes of the game with 10 men, following Tamir Cohen’s dismissal for a second yellow card. “The sending off was a difficult one to take but, again, the boys deserve some credit because we worked so hard to pull together to get a great result for Bolton,” he said. “To move up to 13th now is really important. We have got two big games coming up now against Sunderland then Wigan at home, so we will hopefully get another couple of wins and kick on again.” Muamba dished out special praise for skipper Kevin Davies’ whose goal put Wanderers on their way to a second victory in seven days against one of their relegation rivals. “Kev was awesome — they didn’t know what to do with him,” he said. “He won all the second balls, everything in the air, so credit to him, he was awesome — there’s no other word for him.” And laying the first goal on a plate for the Wanderers striker was Chung-Yong Lee, who has been an unmitigated success since his summer move to the Reebok from FC Seoul in the summer, according to Muamba. “Chungy is the most consistent player in the team — he does it week in, week out,” he said. “I’m so pleased for the guy. The way he set up the first goal was world class.”
