DANIEL Sturridge reckons it took him just 20 seconds to decide to join Wanderers.

The on-loan Chelsea striker, in line for a debut against Wolves tonight, had grown frustrated with his lack of regular first team games at Stamford Bridge.

Sturridge claims he was never offered to Liverpool as a £10million makeweight in the record-breaking deal that took Fernando Torres to West London. But rather than face a season as a back-up to the £50million Spaniard, potentially collecting medals at a club still gunning for a treble, the 21-year-old opted to do his auditioning at the Reebok.

“Owen Coyle convinced me right away,” he said. “I didn’t need to hear anything else after about 20 seconds.

“It was easy for me to make a decision to come here, a club that the manager actually wanted me to come to.

“It was said that Chelsea were offering me to go to Liverpool but that wasn’t the case. Chelsea told me from day one that they weren’t letting me go to any top four clubs, or Liverpool for that matter.

“I’m an ambitious guy – the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League are there still but whether I would have started any of those games remains to be seen. I might have been involved but being involved sometimes isn’t enough, you want to be starting on those big occasions.

“It was a big decision to come down here and start playing football but it has worked out for a lot of players in the past and hopefully it will work out for me.”
