Wanderers fans have voted their thrilling victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2001 as the greatest moment in the club’s history.

Sam Allardyce’s newly-promoted side came from a goal down to stun their neighbours 2-1 on their return to the Premier League.

The match came out on top as more than 1,700 supporters voted in 188SPORT’s “Moments in Time” campaign.

Craig Cheeke, who posted the winning entry, said: “Our away win against local rivals was sweet.

“After going behind, it was a superb comeback.”

Frank Worthington's goal of the season against Ipswich in the 1979 was voted second, Albert Cole, who posted it, describing it as: “The best goal ever scored at Burnden Park”.

Third was Keith Branagan’s penalty save from Stuart Lovell in the 4-3 play-off final victory against Reading at Wembley in 1995 which helped Wanderers gain promotion to the top flight.

James Noble, who highlighted the memorable moment, said: “Reading were awarded a penalty with a chance to put the game beyond Bolton and make the score 3-0.

“Every single Bolton fan in Wembley and across the country was willing Keith Branagan to make the save and leave us with a glimmer of hope. Every Bolton fan knew we would go on to win the game and win promotion to the Premier League.”

The game itself was considered the fourth best moment, while Wanderers first ever Sunday match, a 3-2 FA Cup triumph over Stoke at Burnden Park on January 3, 1974 , was fifth.

Cynthia Glover, who posted it, said: “My favourite player of all time John Byron got a hat-trick. Happy days.”

Wanderers stars past and present also nominated their favourite moments. Current manager Owen Coyle also picked the play-off victory against Reading, a game in which he scored.

Captain Kevin Davies chose scoring against goalkeeping legend Oliver Kahn in the 2-2 draw with European giants Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in 2007, while former boss Sam Allardyce opted for Jay Jay Okocha’s performance against Aston Villa in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final in 2004.

“His second goal has to be a candidate for goal of the season,” said Allardyce.

“He is an inspirational player, the best player this club has seen, even going back to the time of Nat Lofthouse.

“ He bent the ball with power with the outside of his right foot and sent it flying into the top right-hand corner. It was awesome.”
