GARY Megson has compared his fractious spell as manager of Wanderers to that of browbeaten Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean.
In an interview with the BBC aired last night, the controversial 52-year-old, now manager at League One Sheffield Wednesday, reflected on his often troubled relationship with Whites fans.
“I liked Bolton as a football club but the supporters didn’t like me and I don’t particularly like them either.
“You realise what, in my view, proper support is and that’s here (Sheffield Wednesday).
“They made my life really, really difficult. At the moment, poor old Steve Kean at Blackburn . . . they might be having a go at a person, they might be having a go at an entity, like the board, but what they are doing is making life nigh-on impossible for the team.”
Megson even ventured that his own unpopularity on the terraces had also crept into the performances of his players during two years at the helm.
“In the Premier League everything has to be focused on the first team and winning because it is so, so difficult at that level,” he said.
“I used to see it myself at Bolton where they wouldn’t do it consciously, but the players would know that if they got beat it wouldn’t be them who got any criticism, it would be somebody else.
“I’m not saying you hide behind it, but you’ve always got that shield that someone else is going to carry the can.”
