Wanderers new boy Jay Spearing says the team needs to cut out the silly mistakes that have hampered their start to the Championship season.
The Liverpool loan man saw first-hand the challenge the Whites face on his full debut at Hull City when Owen Coyle’s men slipped to a third successive away defeat – their second in the league.
After agreeing a season-long stay at the Reebok Stadium on deadline day, the 23-year-old is up for the challenge but knows Wanderers have to wise up to avoid slipping too far off the pace after collecting just four points from 12 so far.
Spearing said: “I believe we have got a great team but against Hull it never worked for us.
“I wouldn’t say it was difficult debut for me, because we started off really well.
“When we got the ball down and played, I thought we were the better team.
“It was just individual errors that caused us problems and we have to stop those straight away if we want to be near the top.
“Looking back, they didn't put us under a lot of pressure. It was just our own mistakes.
"The players we have got here are more than capable of beating teams like Hull and anyone else in this league.
"If we get our heads together and stop making silly mistakes, I think we will be right up there."
Losing a game is never nice and Spearing admits it is even more frustrating with an international break meaning the Whites have to wait a fortnight to put things right.
A Reebok date with Watford on September 15 is likely to be the Liverpudlian’s home debut and he is already lokking to that game and, hopefully, bouncing back.
He continued: “With the international break it's going to be a long two weeks.
“We wanted to go into this break with a win. But there is nothing we can do about it now.
"I think it is a bad thing. Any team that loses wants to put it right as soon as possible with a win.
"We have got to get back in and get ready for the home game against Watford.
“We just need to work hard in training for Watford and the two games after that.
"We really do need to get as many points as possible."
