OWEN Coyle wants his Wanderers side to end their away-day hoodoo at Birmingham City tonight.

The Whites are unbeaten at the Reebok Stadium and notched a second win of the campaign against Watford on Saturday.

But on the road it has been a different story with back-to-back league defeats and a Capital One Cup exit at Crawley Town.

However, Coyle believes refereeing decisions went against them in their Championship losses at Burnley and Hull City and is confident they can break their duck at St Andrew’s if they reporduce the first-half form from Saturday’s 2-1 home win.

He said: “We’ve played two away games and lost both of them.

“But we could have left with points from each of those games.

“We had two horrendous refereeing decisions against us in those games as well.

“There was the offside goal, as we know, in the first game of the season at Burnley, and then at Hull when, from the [disputed] corner with the score one each at the time.

“If it’s a fair playing field, as we always hope it is, then we have no doubts we can go on our travels and get results.

“We had a great away record last year in relative terms of the Premier League so we know we have the players capable of winning both home and away.

“That’s what we have to do, starting at Birmingham.

“Our first-half display was outstanding at the weekend.

“We scored two goals and could have had four or five.

“We have to attain that level consistently for the duration of a match.

“If we do that then we are convinced we will pick up points game in, game out in the Championship “We are just three points off where we want to be in an automatic promotion spot and we could easily be on that tally in the games we have played. It’s there for us to kick on.”

Despite his optimism, Coyle accepts his side face another tough test against a Birmingham side that narrowly missed out on promotion via the play-offs last season.

They have also had an indiffferent start with one win from five matches but Coyle knows several of the City squad from his Burnley days and expects a rigorous examination of their credentials.

The Whites boss added: “Because of what happened last year, everybody perceives those clubs relegated to the Championship as the ones to be shot at and we are no different.

“Birmingham probably had it last year as well after they went down.

“It’s a tough game there.

“You only have to look at last season to see how well Birmingham did.

“They only lost out in the play-offs.

“Lee (Clark, manager) has come in and added one or two as well.

“We know they have quality there.

“They have a lot of good players, some of those I know very well who played for me (at Burnley).

“It’s good to catch up with those boys. Stevie Caldwell was my skipper and Wade Elliott played every game for me. These are lads I have a very high opinion of both as footballers and men.

“But they know, as I do though, the focus tonight will be on the winning the game for our clubs.”
