ZAT Knight reckons his burgeoning central defensive partnership with Matt Mills is on the right track.

Even though Wanderers are still struggling to keep clean sheets – with just one to show from their first eight games of the season – Knight believes the back four have looked more solid in their last few outings.

“We’re getting a bit more of an understanding,” he said. “With me and Matt, each day you play alongside each other it gets that little bit better, and long may it continue.

“There’s still room for improvement but I think it will come in time.

“With Tim (Ream) out of the squad on Saturday and Sam (Ricketts) on the bench, there’s a bit of competition there. Wheater is due back towards the end of the year too.

“Those boys who have been left out and are obviously frustrated. Hopefully they show that in training now and when they get another opportunity they make it count.

“But it means we've got to stay on our toes.”

Victory over Sheffield Wednesday leaves Wanderers six points off leaders Brighton, and three off the play-off positions.

And by the time of the next international break, Knight wants the gap to have closed even further.

“The boys are buzzing like we're top of the league after a win but we know we're going to have to keep our feet on the ground,” he said.

“We have got two really important home games coming up now and we know we can't let the performances drop. We have to keep playing like that.”
