A female fan has apologised to England forward Sam Burgess for attacking him with a stick.

Julie Burgess, mother of the former Bradford prop, complained after her 25-year-old son was hit over the head as he left the field after helping his team, South Sydney, to an 18-2 win over Penrith Panthers.

Penrith held an investigation into the incident and say the fan came forward the morning after the match to offer an explanation.

A statement from the club said: "The fan has unreservedly apologised for causing any harm to the NRL and the Panthers. They have also offered an apology to Sam and the South Sydney club.

"Appropriate action has been taken against the fan and Panthers, Souths and the NRL are satisfied that the matter has now been resolved."
