Ice rink to open in Victoria Square tomorrow
Phil from Smithills wrote:
The ice rink is usually a great success, why don't Bolton Council try to have the event on a more permanent arrangement, to help rejuvenate the town centre. This would help Bolton be a more family friendly town centre, attracting people here for miles around the Bolton area.
The closed & empty Williams car sales rooms on Bradshawgate could be a perfect venue for an all year round event. Surely Bolton Council could actively help to accommodate this if they are serious in trying to regenerate Bolton Town centre.

World of Wicker moving out of Bolton town centre 'because business rates are too high'
Bob Shaftoe wrote:
Sad to see this happen, but what a great opportunity to improve this major junction. Flatten the building and remove the 'dog leg' layout , make the approach from Manchester Road into 4 lanes and move the hardly used cycle lanes onto a shared pavement or do away with them entirely.

The Market Place to be transformed into new shopping, cinema and restaurant complex
Nowhere for over 50s to shop? M&S, BHS and Debenhams are all kitted out for those who are older. Then there's an Evans. I would say Next probably fit into that category too, though they can appeal to a wide range.
The clothing options for younger people has been stripped of a Top Shop, whilst Miss Selfridges and Dorothy Perkins has been squashed into BHS. There is Zara and H&M, as well as New Look. But teenagers/young adults are not catered for much more.
If there's anything we need more of it's restaurants, which is exactly what this company are wanting to give us. Plus a town centre cinema. These are the things that will bring people into the town centre - come in for a meal, or a film, and do a bit of shopping first!
As for parking, even if the Market Place closed their car park, Topp Way car park is a couple of minutes walk across a busy, well lit street. Then there's the Victora Hall car park equidistant.
I think you also find, that whilst it was once the Market Place and the Market Hall, the Market Hall section of the shopping centre is now also Market Place with the last development. That was a very unpopular development and one I, too, disliked.
But if we're going to do anything to save this town centre, THIS is what needs to happen.
