SHARPLES School and Rivington and Blackrod High are the most-improved schools in Bolton.

Today’s GCSE figures show Rivington and Blackrod is up from 38 per cent to 50 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades, including English and maths, while Sharples rose from 31 per cent to 45 per cent of pupils meeting the benchmark standard.

Headteachers at the two schools have expressed their delight at the results.

Tony Purcell, of Rivington and Blackrod, said: “These are excellent results, which will continue to improve.

“The success is down to the relentless focus on teaching and learning across the school, the excellent skills of all of our staff and their total dedication to helping each and every student to achieve to the very best of their ability.

“We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of students and the support of parents.”

Lynne Porter, of Sharples School, said the pupils had embraced a programme of study implemented by the Year 11 learning director.

She said: “We offer a wide range of courses to suit the learning styles of students. Pupils responded to the new courses and gained individual success, encouraging them to work harder.

“The rewards system in school ensures pupils are encouraged to work towards academic targets and this has been a significant factor in our success.”

She added: “All staff, pupils and parents have contributed to the improved results. We are committed to maintaining improvement for all students to achieve their potential.”
