The Cobblers hitman struck twice in the first half of the second-round clash on miserable a night for Wanderers, who had defender Gary Cahill sent off for a reckless challenge seven minutes before half-time.
Akinfenwa shocked Gary Megson's side – 45 places above the League One outfit in the Football League - when he opened the scoring with a 22nd-minute penalty after Gavin McCann handled in the area.
And the striker doubled Town’s advantage six minutes later when he out-jumped Cahill to head home Adbul Osman’s cross six minutes later.
