THE healthy eating secrets of Bolton Wanderers super-fit footballers have finally been revealed.

Kevin Nolan has told how his lung-busting performances in midfield are down to his love of oranges.

And flamboyant striker El-Hadji Diouf swears by a portion of Brussels sprouts.

The White's players revealed their favourite fruit and vegetables as part of a campaign to encourage more young sportsmen and women to eat their five-a-day.

The team's favourite was the trusty potato, with seven players voting it as their favourite vegetable.

It was not just the English players such as Matt Taylor and Danny Guthrie who voted for the energy-rich spud - Greece international Stelios Giannakopoulos and Ivorian defender Abdoulaye Meite love their taters too.

And Spanish defender Ivan Campo revealed a penchant for peas.

The apple came out on top in the fruit department, voted for by Kevin Davies and Joey O'Brien among others, closely followed by the banana - a favourite of Nicky Hunt and Jlloyd Samuel.

Jussi Jaaskelainen joined Nolan as a fan of oranges, but Israeli midfielder Tamir Cohen was a little more adventurous, plumping for the plum.

The initiative is being run by the Eat in Colour organisation.

Spokesman Anthony Levy said: "It's great to see that the Wanderers are enjoying a wide range of fruit and veg to help them get all the nutrients they need to play world-class football."

Eat in Colour conducted the research to encourage young footballers to think about their diet.

They teamed up with a number of Premier League clubs and dieticians to create a downloadable meal planner to give young footballers the best possible tips for getting match fit, with easy to follow recipes and serving suggestions ideal for parents.

To cover their baldness, some could use syrup of figs.

From a parents point of view I think its a wonderful idea. I really struggle getting my son to eat fruit and veg and if this influences him to only try some fruit then I will be grateful.

This is absolutely bizarre!

What happened to babe's-yead and chips with mushy peas. Anybody looking for culinary representations of characters at the Reebok couldn't go past cabbage for Mr Megson, and turnip for Mr Gartside. The Bolton News must be absolutely desperate for a story.

Fruit and veg is good for you shocker! If people haven't realised this by now then there's no hope for them. Incidentally this article is nothing to do with Megson's fitness and nutrition regime which surely is failing and simply about players favourite fruit and veg. Nolan's lung busting performances? My answer to that is lay off the oranges then if that's the effect they have.

This must clearly be some kind of joke. Nolan has been and looked totally unfit all season as have most of the team. Why when there are serious questions to be asked of the owners and management of the club are the BN asking the players what their favourite fruit and veg is. Hard hitting journalism at its best. I wonder if the local rags in Reading and Birmingham are asking such searching questions.

Well I would give all the team for our game against Sunderland next week Peas and brussel sprouts and watch them fly round the pitch. BN your having a laugh.
