Megson sees bright future for Sunderland

GARY Megson believes Premiership survival could be just the start for the new-look Sunderland.

The Wanderers boss admires the way the Black Cats have managed their first season back in the top flight and is predicting manager Roy Keane, with the backing of chairman Niall Quinn and the club's Irish investors, will build on that success.

But first, he hopes Wanderers can take advantage of the Wearsiders' poor away record in Saturday's make or break showdown at the Reebok.

"I think it's a work in progress at Sunderland," Megson said in praise of Keane's men.

"Roy's taken them up from the Championship, they've established themselves in their first season and now he'll want to kick on.

"They've done well. They've changed the team, brought in a lot of players and finished the season well with very strong home form."

Sunderland fans have voiced concerns over whether Keane will be prepared to commit himself long-term to the Black Cats, but Megson says the success has been a collective effort.

"It's not about Roy Keane or about individuals. It's about the football club itself," he said.

"Roy's done well in his first 18 months as manager; Niall Quinn has done well in his two years as chairman; the new people who have come on board frrom Ireland and pumped their money in, have done well, but most of all the players have done well and that's what it always comes down to. It's the players, although Roy has brought those players in."

How do you see the future for the Wanderers then Megson ? You seem to have more to say about other teams, than your own !

This report says it all - he talk about other clubs and whilst he is doing that his eye is NOT on the ball for when it comes to Wanderers.

Does any other manager talk about other clubs more than their own? - its not as if Megson is playing mind games because everyione cann see through him!!!!

Megson - just get out of Football, completely, you do not know what your doing!!!

Wonder if Mr Keane has given a in depth interview to the Sunderland Echo praising Megson for the sterling work he has done at Bolton? Or does he just get on with his job...

yeah i can imagine the headline- "i just hope i can emulate Megson"..... as much as i hated keane whilst at the scum, he was a very good appointment, young manager hungry for success but unproven track record, so a bit of a gamble at the time. megson wasnt a gamble, we knew we were getting a a loser, its just a good job that this season has been one of the weakest ever premier leagues

If Megson admires Sunderland so much can I have a personal plea with Mr Keane - please give Megson a job (even if its only clearing the rubbish after the matches!)

I feel sorry for Megson more than anything! Why are we critising a bloke who has bravely come to a club that has been ripped to pieces by one man and one man only! Gartside! You tried your best Gary but with a plank like that along side you youve no chance! So do yourself a favour and keep kissing a*se and save your career im sure some one will offer you a job sooner or later!

Feel sorry for Megson. That sounds like talk from an intelligent Blackburn fan. You state that Megson as tried his best. If Rasiak and Cohen are the best that he can come up with the club is doomed with this guy in charge. Gartside doesnt pick the team, doesnt get involved with the tactics, and doesnt sign c--p! Sorry Megson as got to go for the club to move forward-irrespective of wether we stay up or not.

Hope Keane is looking for a number 2. I think that Megson has just applied.

I think Megson is a great number 2... but not in a footballing sense... if you follow me!

I think what all of you have failed to notice is that this is clearly a sound bite. Its not as if Megson has called a press conference to talk about Sunderland, rather he would have talked about it after being asked about the opposition this weekend.

And to be fair, our fate pretty much lies in how Sunderland approach this game, to speak out in there favour is a very good move by Megson.
