Anelka to miss Wanderers final day clash - report
Anelka in a Wanderers shirt for the last time
Anelka in a Wanderers shirt for the last time

Nicolas Anelka is banned from playing against Wanderers on the last day of the season, according to a report in The Sun.

It is a match which could decide if Chelsea win the title and whether Wanderers beat the drop.

But the report claims the £15m striker Anelka will not figure at Stamford Bridge because of a new rule introduced last summer which states a player cannot face his former team after moving on loan and then signing permanently for that club.

Although it was never made public at the time, Anelka actually signed for Chelsea on loan on the night of Friday, January 11, says The Sun.

That was because there was not enough time to arrange a permanent switch before the home meeting with Spurs the next day.

The deal was sealed the following week but the method of Anelka's transfer means he can only play one more Premier League game this season - at Newcastle on Monday.

The rule which has condemned Anelka to the sidelines on May 11 is the same one which prevented Jermain Defoe playing for Portsmouth at Spurs.

Chelsea asked the Premier League board on Tuesday for special dispensation but their case was thrown out.

I do so hope this is true. Once this fixture was published and we knew Anelka was moving to Chelski some of us with vivid imaginations could envisage a horrendous scenario and hopefully now this could never happen!

And what exactly do you expect anyone to do with this 'information'. Oh, and how many of the "Gartside & Megson" out people named their replacements and a plan for getting them in? Or do they think the club will run itself somehow?

Sheeesh...

The club is virtually running itself anyway. Gartslime unable to give his duties full attention and the players don't work with Gary 'Mr Relegation' Megson. I would rather have Hansel and Gretal in charge rather than these two no-hopers.

Why did we loan him to Tottenham when they only put him on the bench and brought him on for 20 minutes?!?!?! We lost to Blackburn that weekend 2-1!!! Surely Mr Gartside you could have waited for the next week to put the transfer through, got 90 more minutes out of him and allowed the fans to thank him for his goals!! Another one added to the list of Gartside's errors!

Gartside has been Chairman during the most successful period of Wanderers in recent times. Should he go for one bad season?

Sorry meant to say we loaned him to Chelsea for their game versus Tottenham. Was Gartside in such a rush to get rid of our best player or something? In the Blackburn game we really could have done with Nic

Sorry meant to say we loaned him to Chelsea for their game against Tottenham. That weekend we lost to Blackburn and with Nic we probably would have won.

I am impressed with the Bolton (Evening) News. Their role now is to copy and paste from 'The Sun' rather than phone up someone at BWFC and check out the syory direct. Have all the telephones been cut off at the B(E)N offices?
Posted by: Carl_XVI_Gustaf, Sverige on 1:06pm Fri 2 May 08
Apologies to 'Il Duce'....I see you had already beaten me to this point!

Maybe the B(E)N were telling fibs the other week when they said that they were asking loads of questions of BWFC but getting no answers. Maybe the truth is that they can't be bothered getting off their backsides and asking the tough questions.

No-one cares about all the fluff from Megson about Sunderland being a great side or 'We can emulate Birmingham'. Ask the probing questions! We need answers.

Hang about, why should BWFC comment on the availability of an ex-player??? It's got nowt to do with them. The only people who could or should comment are Chelsea and/or the FA and both are probably too busy to chat about team selection with some smalltown newspaper.

I think some of you seem to think the BN is some kind of Federal Investigation Branch sometimes. It's just a local rag that tells you when there has been a wheelie bin fire or some faulty traffic lights in Crompton Way.

Don't forget the BN reporters have much more important things to do such as tell us about a chip fan fire in Deane!

Proper journalism seems to be dead at the BN, they probably get their stories reading the tabloids over breakfast.

Anyway back to the important stuff, I've been reading on other sites and Chelsea fans don't seem to care that he's not playing. He's hardly set the world alight!

I know, could this be another fallen angel?

How long before he is dropped from the French side for lack of match fitness?

Is painful to see him being used the way he his. When he left us he was about the 4th top scorer in the league, where is he now?
Posted by: mick, bolton on 3:07pm Fri 2 May 08
can't believe all this speculation about anelka, will he play, will he not.don't clubs put in clauses to prevent ex players from playing against their former teams?it's not as though we didn't know we would be playing chelski last game of the season.

because they are the very club which sold him having made what seems yet again to be a very strange arrangement, one of which ive never heard of, sounds very much like the usual sort of football dodge, i suggest that both clubs were party to this and have put pen to paper so i dont see as to why bwfc shouldnt comment on an agreement. lack of transparencey yet again.

what is this c*ap theres no way in hell we would have loaned anelka to chelsea and how was there not enough time according to anelka's agent the deal was in the works weeks before the offer was made. though to be honest i hope he cant play as its 1 less player to worry about

Trotter, the man has been sold. It now has nothing to do with BWFC so why should they comment. Only the FA can really say for certain if the player eligible.

The club don't owe you an explanation for absolutely everything!

Not we should worry against chelsea, after all we have Nolan!

I think I have that record - bought it from the Happy Shop at Burnden if memory serves me well. It reminds me of those promotion chasing seasons in 75/76/77 when I stood in the Lever End, and the big cup games against Newcastle & Everton. We always seemed to just miss out....

Breeze, you are correct that the club don't owe an explanation for everything. However, the Sun (of all newspapers) felt that there was enough of a story in this to pursue it...making it NEWS!

Why, then, can't the BN pursue this with BWFC, FA and/of Chelsea to see if there is anything in the Sun report?

Anyway, what is the secret that BWFC feel they can't share the news with BW fans? Unless, of course, they never wanted it revealed that we not only let Anelka go, but we were so desperately to get our hands on the 15 million that we opted for a hushed up loan deal to guarantee we got the money.

This is right up there alongside BWFC and Chelsea negotiating the deal as far back as November (or further back?)!

i dont expect the club to tell me everything, but something would be a start, they cant even publish a reserve fixture list on their site with results, goalscores, tables etc, unless i'm navigating through the 'adverts' wrongly, also gartside is big at the fa so i would have though that 3 months after the transfer we would have been in a position at our end to say whether anelka plays or not in what could be our last premiership match and could be the difference between staying up and going down, i might even give gartside credit for possibly knowing this ruling and manufacturing the situation with his inside knowledge, contrary to popular opinion the fa dont just make the rules up as they go along, having thought about this gartside might have used his knowledge of fa rules to our advantage for a change.

great record i was 12 at time, still remember the tune from my first match. perhaps we could get them to play it today, might be a bit crackly being on vinyl! wish i had a copy, still can hear it in my head, along with the other voices!
