UPDATE: Anelka out of Wanderers clash

NICOLAS Anelka might not have relished having to play against Wanderers in what could be a decisive final day showdown at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea certainly wanted him to.

Anelka is ineligible because his £15m transfer to the Bridge on January 11 was rushed through, initially as a loan deal, to enable him to play against Spurs the following day.

Premier League rules state that a loaned player cannot play against his former club, even if his transfer is later made permanent, which Anelka's was the following week.

Chelsea failed this week in an appeal to the Premier League board for special dispensation to play the Frenchman in the game that, depending on results in the meantime, could decide the destination of the title and whether Wanderers survive in the Premiership.

Interestingly the following article has not been copied and pasted by the hacks on here. It was removed when I last posted it early this morning and removed from NewsNow too??!! From the Sun: Under the headline

"SAM SAYS HE'LL BE HURT IF BOLTON GO DOWN"

WHEN Sam Allardyce claimed the Bolton he built was being destroyed, the club were so outraged it released an official statement refuting the claim.

Big Sam had struck a raw nerve. His ghost still haunts every corner of the Reebok.

In fact, there are those in the hierarchy who think Allardyce would enjoy Bolton being relegated because it would add to his legend.

Nothing could be further from the truth. He did not put in years of hard graft to see it go down the tubes.

As the Trotters prepare for a must-win game against Sunderland today, Allardyce will be praying for victory.

He said: “Of course I care about what happens to them.

Allardyce: I still care
“I spent nearly eight years building that club up and added to the times I was there as a player, I’ve been associated with Bolton for 18 years.

“I don’t want to see everything go to waste but they know they should not be in this position.

“It will be great if they survive but that’s not achievement. They should have been much higher up the table.

“Perhaps they will learn lessons from what’s gone on.”

However the season ends, Allardyce — out of work since being axed in January by Newcastle — does not see himself ever going back again.

He and Bolton chairman Phil Gartside fell out spectacularly and the wounds have not healed.

He revealed: “I’m living back in the town and fans come up to me all the time telling me how it’s all gone wrong.

“They ask if I’m going back but I always say ‘No’. It was a great time but it’s finished.”

Allardyce points to the January sale of Nicolas Anelka as a crucial factor.

He reckons if they kept the striker instead of taking Chelsea’s £15m they would be safe.

Big Sam said: “I’m surprised they sold Anelka when they did.

"He’d just signed a new contract in the summer and, while he was always likely to move on at some stage, they could have kept him till the end of the season.

“If they’d kept him I’m sure they would be OK by now.

“It’s a big-pressure game but they will beat Sunderland, whose away record isn’t very good.”

And what about this one??!! Priceless!!!

From the Mirror today:

Kevin Nolan: Bolton need to stick with Gary Megson
By David Anderson 3/05/2008

Kevin Nolan has urged Bolton to stick with Gary Megson even if they go down because he is "the new Sam Allardyce".

Nolan claims Bolton desperately need some stability after going through three managers in a year and fears they could nosedive further if they make another change.

The Wanderers skipper can see many of former boss Allardyce's qualities in Megson and is adamant he can restore the club's fortunes.

"Gary is someone who's come in and worked hard," said Nolan. "He has the same qualities I saw in Sam Allardyce. I see a lot of what Gary's doing the same as what Sam did.

"I am still delighted with the appointment. He can take us further, keep us in the Premier League and take us to where we belong.

"You don't want to become an unstable club and if we keep sacking managers and bringing someone else in, we could go that way. And there's only one place we're going if that happens - and that's down.

"We've got to be able to stick with the managers, like we used to, because this club over the last seven or eight years has been one of the most stable in the Premier League. "It has been a big shock to the system what has happened in the last year and we've just got to make sure we give this manager the time and all the support he needs."

Several fans will disagree with Nolan's backing for Megson with the club just one point above the relegation zone going into this evening's must-win home game with Sunderland. They want 'Mugson' - as they've dubbed him - out.

Nolan understands their anger but says Megson and the players need their support at this critical time. I've seen the fans' frustration at first hand," said the midfielder. "I know a lot of season ticket holders and they understand the situation.

"I just urge them to stay behind us and keep supporting us to make sure we do remain in the Premier League.

"Then next year we will move back in the right direction. I really believe that. I urge the small minority of supporters to stop being so negative."

The words Sacrilege and BWFC Spin come to mind!!

Come on you white men!!! I do hope you are not as nervous as I am!!

Re Pedro's item just above (good spot there matey) - it's quite clearly been ghost written by a PR hack - the dead giveaways are a lack of sincerity and the attack on the dissenting fans. Whatever happens, Negson/Mugson is bad for this club: (for statistical proof see Daniel Finkenstein's article in this morning's Times: doubtless Pedro can get it pasted in here).
