Diouf strike puts Whites on brink of survival

Wanderers 1 Sunderland 0

Half-time

EL-Hadji Diouf put Wanderers within 45 minutes of Premier League safety when he broke a tense Reebok stalemate three minutes before half-time.

The Senegalese hitman, possibly playing his last game at the Reebok, produced a touch of class in an otherwise unremarkable game to put Wanderers firmly in the driving seat.

Diouf showed class and composure to finish at the far post after skipper Kevin Nolan had delivered an inch-perfect cross from the right.

It was only Wanderers' second real chance of note in the game, with Kevin Davies spurning a good opportunity in the 28th minute when he headed over a Diouf cross.

Davies was having an influential game, shrugging off any concerns over his injured hand with some strong challenges that let the Sunderland defence know they were in for a game.

Sunderland's only real chance of the game came on the half-hour mark when striker Kenwyne Jones cut in from the left and fired in a low shot that Ali Al-Habsi dealt with quite comfortably.

Sunderland had shown little to worry Wanderers supporters, who raised the roof at the Reebok with some more fantastic support.

2-0 good lads, now is the time to have a demo to rid the useless, clueless management out. good to see strong management shown by allowing Abdoulaye Meite back on the bench.should never have been allowed to step back into the reebok ever again. once again well done to the team.

Just been watching it on the TV. Couldn't be there at the Reebok.

I said months ago that 36 points would be enough.

I thought the fans today were absolutely brilliant. I could here them on the TV. It seemed like they never stopped.

Hopefully this summer will see some positive improvements to the squad.

Congratulations Whites. Even all the way here in Dallas I could feel the nerves of the fans in the stands but still Diouf should have had three. Now I will get to see them next season, we don't get championship coverage here.
Way to go lads!!

Good to see so many of our fans across the miles were on the forum with their support during the match.
It was fantastic but I am absolutley exhausted.
Must give Megson some credit though who would have thought we could be in this position a few weeks ago? 10 points out of a possible 12 fantastic!!!!!!!!
WELL DONE YOU WHITES!!!

Thanks for the memories Dioufy. You've given us 4 years which is an achievement in itself these days, and belies the media image of you.

All the best and good luck!

Go enjoy Spain or Italy...just don't wanna see you at West ham or some average Prem club.

Thanks for the good times Dioufy, don't go to the circus at Eastlands, if Negson wasn't manager Dioufy would stay, simple as.
