SAM Allardyce had given up hope of beating Liverpool or Arsenal in the race for a Champions League place but he reckoned 14 points from the remaining 10 games would get Wanderers back into the UEFA Cup.

However, a 2-1 home defeat by Blackburn and a 4-1 hammering at Manchester United left the manager wondering whether the "fear of failure" was beginning to haunt his players.

Kevin Davies scored the only goal as Wanderers stopped the rot with a win at Sheffield United to stay fifth.

Nicolas Anelka allayed fears that he could be on his travels at the end of the season telling The Bolton News readers how grateful he was to Wanderers for getting his career back on track.
