PLAYERS contradicted Sam Allardyce's view, insisting Wanderers were still in the Champions League hunt, but the optimism at the start of the month eventually gave way to resignation - quite literally.

There was no hint when they won 3-1 at Wigan on Easter Saturday of the dramatic events that would unfold just three weeks later. Andranik scored twice to suggest that the talented Iranian had a big future at the Reebok but, as it turned out, Big Sam did not.

The night before Wanderers played at Chelsea, it emerged that the man who had led the club for seven and a half years, was about to quit.

He was on the touchline at Stamford Bridge, where Lubo Michalik and Kevin Davies scored in a 2-2 draw, but the following day - April 29 - it was announced that Allardyce had resigned. He'd planned to step down at the end of the season but had decided to go with immediate effect.

Twenty-four hours later Sammy Lee - Allardyce's assistant - was installed as manager Phil Gartside said Lee had all the credentials to succeed Allardyce and he had not considered any other candidates.
