SUMMER signings Jlloyd Samuel, Gavin McCann, Gerald Cid and Danny Guthrie joined Wanderers on their trip to South Korea, where they competed in the Peace Cup, losing to Lyon in the final.
The tournament saw Sammy Lee adopt a 4-4-2 formation - a radical change from the 4-5-1/4-3-3 set-up Allardyce preferred. Lee added Fulham's Icelandic striker, Heidar Helgusson, to his growing list of summer recruits, then signed the Swedish international, Christian Wilhelmsson, on a season-long loan from Nantes. But there was bad news on the injury front for Stelios. Two weeks before the start of the new season, the Greece international needed surgery to clear a long-standing hernia problem.
