THE pressure mounted on Sammy Lee as Wanderers became rooted in the relegation zone after successive defeats at home to Everton and away to Birmingham.

It seemed the rookie manager could not do right for doing wrong. Thinking Ivan Campo was set for an August move, he chose not to register him for the UEFA Cup, and was then pilloried when the European Cup winner had to stay at home as Wanderers kicked off their campaign with a lucky 1-1 draw away to the Macedonian minnows, Rabotnicki.

But Campo spectacularly came in from the cold as Lee, following a crisis meeting with senior players, reverted to the tried and trusted formula.

The Spaniard made a scoring comeback in a 1-1 home draw with fellow strugglers Tottenham - and, at last, Wanderers were starting to look like their old selves.

The knives were still out for Lee, though, and a 1-1 draw at Derby left him on the edge.
