ANTHONY Backhouse, in his letter, “UK’s indigenous people” (June 26), cites the existence of four racial groups — the English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish — in support of his claim that the British people are not “a nation of foreigners”. But he forgets that none of those groups have their origins within the British Isles!

I LIVE next to the railway line in between Lostock and Westhoughton, and early yesterday morning noticed a distressed cow running inbetween the railway tracks towards Lostock railway station.

SADLY, there is no Nobel Prize for stupidity. If there had been, a strong contender for this year’s nomination would surely have been the highway engineer who decided to plaster Chorley New Road in Horwich with double yellow lines, all the way from the junction with Winter Hey Lane to the beginning of the Horwich RMI frontage.
