Not all buildings are worth saving

4:26pm Saturday 20th March 2010

SCARCELY a week goes by without Bolton Council being chastised, in your columns, for allowing the demolition of, or failing to find a new use for, one or another clapped out ancient pile for which nobody else has any use. Long ago, it was Farnworth Grammar School. More recently we have had the Odeon cinema, the old Marsden House fire station and the Clarence Street school. Now Horwich Loco Works is being added to the list (The Bolton News, March 17). And the criticism is equally severe, whether or not the council actually owns the building.

Cruel efficiency of nature

4:27pm Saturday 20th March 2010

I THOUGHT that readers would be interested to hear about a very strange and slightly disturbing instance of bird behaviour which I witnessed while walking by the middle brook at Deane.

Why we support ‘Robin Hood’ tax

4:27pm Saturday 20th March 2010

ALAN Calvert stated in his column (March 1) that the parties contesting the forthcoming general election agree that cuts are necessary if the national debt is to be tackled.

A town of racial cohesion

2:51pm Friday 19th March 2010

I REFER to Mr G Moore’s letter “EDL are fighting for their beliefs” (March 16).

Sea Cadets are a credit to town

2:52pm Friday 19th March 2010

ON behalf of Bolton United Service Veteran’s Association I am appalled to find out that Bolton Council is charging Bolton Sea Cadets £1,000 per month rent for their premises in Castle Street.

This protest is to save our way of life

2:57pm Friday 19th March 2010

IN reply to Chris Chilton’s letter (March 9). The EDL is protesting against Muslim extremists who are determined to destroy our way of life in this country.

Beware dangers of political and racial repression

2:58pm Friday 19th March 2010

THANK you to The Bolton News for printing my letter “Out Of Touch”. Sadly, I will be working overseas on the 20th — yes, I will be an immigrant worker.

Searching for David Hargreaves

2:58pm Friday 19th March 2010

I wonder if you would be able through your newspaper to help me trace David Hargreaves. We both attended Churchill College where we studied English from 1964 to 1968. He was a keen Wanderers supporter I remember, and a useful right winger himself for the college football team. We have team reunions from time to time, and it would be great to see him again.

Just what are the beliefs of the EDL?

2:47pm Friday 19th March 2010

Precisely what is it that members of the English Defence League wish to defend?

Divisive ideas are not wanted

2:48pm Friday 19th March 2010

I AM scornful of attempts by the EDL to claim that they follow in the footsteps of forward thinking people like the Jarrow marchers and the Suffragettes.
