Parking law is the same for everybody

2:51pm Monday 10th December 2007

I AM writing in response to Cllr Nick Peel's letter to The Bolton News (Tuesday, December 4), explaining Bolton Council's parking enforcement system, and also the allegations made by Mr Barry Moss.

Our council is happy to give tacit approval to over-zealous parking wardens who regularly ticket cars for parking inches outside a parking bay, or for not having their disabled badges positioned in the correct manner, or for a myriad of other technicalities.

In these cases, the motorist has no defence and is told "the law is the law", yet Cllr Peel's adherence to the law becomes decidedly woolly when it comes to the council's own parking bays.

I'm sorry, Cllr Peel, but "the law is the law" and if some of your bays are not painted correctly and the correct signage not displayed then you should not be making excuses.

Whether the council acted in "good faith" is irrelevant and is an excuse that would fall upon deaf ears if a motorist ever used it as a defence.

If some of the bays are not illegal then there is no need to change any of them.

Trying to discredit Mr Moss for his over-zealous attitude is ironic, as Mr Moss seems to have the right qualities required to become a traffic warden in our town.
