A major junction linking Lancashire, Bury and Bolton was shut for more than four hours this evening after a crash.

Emergency services were called just before 4.30pm to what residents have described as a ‘horrific’ crash.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 4.20pm today (Sunday 19 May), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Bradshaw Road, Bolton.

“Two fire engines from Bolton Central and Bolton North quickly attended the incident which involved two vehicles.

“Two casualties self extricated prior to arrival and crews used specialist equipment to extricate one other.

“Crews worked with colleagues from North West Ambulance Service to assess casualties and make the area safe.

“Firefighters were in attendance for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.”

Police have also been contacted for further information, but have not as yet responded.

Drivers told how they were forced to turn back as emergency services dealt with the incident

The crash has once again prompted calls to improve the junction.

One resident said: "When are they going to put the lights system on, it’s extremely dangerous, absolutely limited view of upcoming cars when you want to cross from Tottington towards Edgworth."

Another said: "This is a notoriously dangerous junction and it’s frankly scandalous improvements haven’t already been made.

"Someone ran a campaign a few years ago after a series of RTCs but zero action.

"Hope there are no serious injuries ."
