I had the privilege and pleasure of being taught the history of English and German by Geoff at Cambridge, and his supervisions were some of the most amusing and interesting I had. My interest in etymology and place names has never wavered since. He was a very good friend to me and I shall never forget his producing a bottle of Sekt at our supervision on my 21st birthday. Not sure how much work we got done that day!

I had the pleasure of having Dr Cubbin for tutorials at Cambridge and I found them among the most enjoyable, thought-provoking and memorable of the many I had while studying there.

Also worth noting is that Dr Cubbin was a great mentor, and one piece of his advice helped me in a decision that shaped the rest of my life and it was a wise decision. Namely not to look at academia as necessarily more fulfilling nor superior to a career in corporate business. That if I had a secure income I could always pursue interests even at the highest level, whereas academia is often a thankless, underpaid and whatever the opposite of halcyon is, life.

I thank him for his honesty. Once he set me an essay to beat the title "die Wahrheit ist unser werteste Gut". I think he was someone qualified to pronounce on that.
