ALFRED Thorne is correct in his comments about traffic and the location of the pedestrian crossing in Church Street, Westhoughton (Action needed on dangerous road crossing, January 3).
His concern may be alleviated in the knowledge that the crossing was located under the guidance and expertise of chartered engineers, ably assisted by Cllr David Wilkinson, Westhoughton South.
The work was initiated and wholly funded by Westhoughton Council, which subsidises Bolton Council. In other words, Westhoughton residents pay twice, however desirable such works may be.
Proposed further work includes a pedestrian crossing in Bolton Road and traffic calming in The Hoskers (£70,000).Over the past 16 years, we have seen a total expenditure of £300,000.
Terry Riley, Dixon Street, Westhoughton
