I HAVE been reading the articles in The Bolton News regarding the new children's centres that are to be built in different Bolton areas, and I am writing to tell of my experiences of Tonge Children's Centre.

Following my two-year-old son having an operation to correct a hearing problem, I was advised by a health visitor to take him to the new Tonge Centre on Starkie Road, so that he could take part in various activities to mix with other children, which would in turn encourage his speech.

When I first called in the centre, the staff were just putting the finishing touches in place in preparation for opening the following week. I was welcomed in and told about various services that ranged from child/parent activities, a library and education courses for parents, to a baby clinic.

Since being involved at the centre and doing various activities, my son has come on leaps and bounds with his speech, and he has made a few friends. The staff at the centre are fantastic, nothing is ever too much trouble, and even though I don't live in the Tonge area, I am made to feel part of the community.

At Christmas, I and other parents were given free tickets to watch the "Aladdin" pantomime at The Albert Halls. We had a great time.

I would say to anyone who has any reservations about new centres being built, go to a centre and sit in the community cafe, talk to the friendly staff and parents, who will tell you of their experiences and how much of a difference it has made to their child/children.
