I WAS surprised to read the feature in 'Looking Back' July 6, about Dorothy Martland's swimming life in BOlton.
She mentions that she was taught to swim by my father's late sister, Mary Pennycook, indeed during the 50s, 60s and 70s, she probably taught a vast amount of people in Bolton.
I just can't understand why she wrote that was taught by the 'infamous' Mary Pennycook. Now my aunty Mary may not have been perfect, who is? But for Dorothy to say she had a bad reputation is something that I have never heard before.
I'm sure my late father and his two brothers would have been upset, if they were alive, to read this article. My aunty was not a woman with a bad reputation.
