FURTHER to Iain Camick's letter (June 20), I have also received a leaflet from GMPTE outlining the plans for the £3bn investment programme for public transport.

While I agree that something needs to be done about congestion on the roads, I am reluctant to use public transport after recent experiences which I and other members of my family have undergone.

My daughter was assaulted in an unprovoked attack on the Metro after an evening at the theatre in Manchester. She was severely traumatised and will not countenance using public transport again.

I recently decided to forego the use of my car to travel to Bolton and went on the bus. Never again!

The behaviour of some of the people on board was absolutely appalling.

I remonstrated with one youth and was met with a stream of foul abuse. I also felt physically threatened.

There were papers scattered all over the bus and the whole atmosphere was terrible. I feel very sorry for the bus drivers who must often feel intimidated.

My husband travelled on the bus on a very hot day to find that hot air was blasting out of the heaters. When he asked the bus driver about this, he was informed that the drivers were instructed to keep the heaters on in hot weather, otherwise the engine would overheat. This was causing discomfort to everybody and, surely, cannot be acceptable.

When the congestion charge comes in - as it will - I certainly will not be using public transport unless, and until, these issues are addressed.
