AMID all the fuss about the Spice Girls getting back together, I'm just wondering if we really need them now.

More than a decade ago, Girl Power was a new concept and their full-on style of pop, fashion and "philosophy" was happily embraced by young females.

In 2007, though, surely we've gone completely in the other direction?

Girls booze in packs, show their bottoms in public but, I'm glad to say, are also greater achievers where it really, really matters because they recognise their right to do well.

The Spice Girls' brand of pop music was tuneful and catchy, but clever management played a large part in their success.

I suspect their stage shows, with all that static pouting and posturing, will actually be quite funny. They didn't all have great voices, either, so it will be interesting to see how this translates on stage.

And our new, young Bratz generation may not warm to the Spices. For them, it's a bit like their mums setting up a group and expecting anything but howling derision.
