ON Thursday there were three accidents within an hour around the Blackburn Road junction with Asda, two on Blackburn Road (one involving a police car) and one on Belmont Road.
Junction improvements alone will not solve issues of congestion and improve road safety. Too many frustrated drivers are jumping red lights, taking chances, and many are on their mobile phones.
It’s a perfect storm of driver behaviour, poor road conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, congestion, lack of investment in road safety by the council and cuts to the public transport fund.
In 2015, when I helped to set-up Bolton Bus Users Forum and Bolton Road Safety Group it was to get people having sensible discussions on these issues.
If we really want to create better road conditions in Bolton we really need a multifaceted approach, investment from the council and government, buy-in from all councillors, public consultations and all input from associated organisations.
