I WRITE to express my concern at the appalling and depressing sight of litter-strewn streets of Bolton.

As a person who walks to work through the School Hill area, north of the town centre, it’s impossible not to be struck by how much debris there is all over the place.

Doubtless, some of the many people who use this as a thoroughfare to access the town centre by crossing Topp Way on to Bath Street, are to blame for dropping the litter.

I understand that in a period of longstanding central government austerity which has seen council budgets squeezed across the UK, keeping the streets clean comes way down the pecking order compared to looking after elderly people in the community and local schools.

But aren’t there anti-litter by-laws whereby people dropping their litter can be fined?

What has happened to enforcing these, or at least cleaning up the mess? Some of the litter I’ve seen has been there for weeks.

Let’s not forget Bolton Council found enough spare cash to give a £300,000 gift to a now defunct personal injury law firm although, admittedly, it was eventually paid back.

I invite our council leaders to step out away from Victoria Square, which I notice is kept clean and tidy, and go to see for themselves the neglect that is evident a stone’s throw from the town centre.
