N Withington (April 17) is several years out if he/she believes that the shops in Bolton only displayed goods in full view windows without shutters between the 1920s and 1950s.
I only moved to Bolton in 1973 and enjoyed several years of out-of-hours window shopping, before the shutters were installed.
Iwould guess that this started in the late 1970s but someone out there might know better?
