At the time of sending my letter, ("Tory apology needed over mail", Saturday, April 19), regarding the allegation that the Conservatives had sent literature to a senior citizen in an envelope franked and paid for by the Town Hall, an investigation by the chief executive's department was ongoing. I should have referred in my letter to an "alleged misdemeanour" and not used the word "fraud", which implied guilt.

I apologise for this. I am now assured by Town Hall officials that the outcome of that investigation is that the case is not proven and that there is no evidence to support that there has been any misuse of public money by the Conservatives.

I accept the official's findings.
