The reaction of local Labour MPs to the impact of abolishing the 10p tax band is nothing short of staggering. Where have they been during the course of the past 12 months?
The Liberal Democrats have been raging against this measure since it was announced by Gordon Brown in the 2007 Budget, particularly the fact that the poorest in our society will be hit hardest.
All three local Labour MPs voted in favour of abolishing the 10 per cent rate on March 18 this year, with Brian Iddon now stating that he is "hopeful" that the adverse impact on the poor is temporary and David Crausby venturing the view that he "thinks" that the measure is a mistake.
Such reactions demonstrate breathtaking complacency and lack of understanding of the impact of the Budget proposals presented for their consideration.
Perhaps the size of the perks and allowances enjoyed by our MPs has made them too far removed from the lot of ordinary voters.
