I WRITE to encourage Mr Ray Collett, who had an article in The Bolton News (April 15) about BRASS and what it is seeking to do for "failed asylum seekers" who are sleeping rough and living in derelict houses.

Of course, many folk will say that these people are scroungers but, as Mr Collett has said, many of them have fled from oppressive regimes and it would be dangerous for them to be repatriated. Britain is not being true to its tradition in the way these people are being treated.

Throughout our history, we have given refuge to numerous people. The Hugenots, who fled from France, are an example - and this caused the trade balance to shift from France to England.

Where would we have been without the son of the French emigre Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the great railway bridge engineer?

Finally, it is good to note your paper's campaign to allow the Sukula family to remain in Britain Philip H Hayworth Mornington Road Bolton
